Flourishing trade brings prosperity. The cities thrive and prosper. But this wealth also attracts barbarians. Wild hordes threaten the island. They have very little time to raise a powerful army of knights. Woe to the cities when the knights are defeated! But how much do you really want to invest in your army? At the same time, each investment means fewer raw materials for trade goods and settlement construction. It is always necessary to balance self-interest against the benefits of the Community. It's in your hands: Do you really want to stand aside when it says, "Who will save Catan from the barbarians?"
To play the expansion, you need the basic game "Catan". It can also be combined with "Seafarers" and "Dealers & Barbarians".
Who's gonna save Catan from the barbarians? The expansion to an award-winning bestseller
Short presentation of the game idea:
With the landscapes of the basic game, Catan is built in a normal frame (1). As soon as every player has founded a settlement and a city, dark clouds are brewing over the peaceful Catan. Wild barbarians, attracted by Catan's wealth, sail in (2). There is still time to face the danger. The strength of the Barbarian army is always equal to the number of cities in Catan. To defeat the Barbarians, the Knights of all players must be at least as strong as the Barbarians.
Knights are not played as cards but are placed as finely modelled hard plastic figures on free intersections. A knight can only fight if a grain has been paid for. Then a helmet is put on the knight. Each point in the knight's flag counts as one strength point (3).
If the activated knights of all players have enough strength points, they succeed in defeating the barbarians and the danger is eliminated for the moment. But if the knights of Catan are too weak, a city is attacked and remains as a settlement.
This loss always affects the player who has contributed none or the fewest knights to the defense. In addition to defending the barbarians, knights can also be used to expel the robber or an enemy knight.
If they are not equipped against the barbarians, the players compete for the construction of metropolises (4), which earn two additional victory points. In order to build a metropolis (Metropolis figure is set to City), players must first upgrade their cities.
The construction of city expansions such as library, market, monastery or town hall is indicated with the city expansion panels (5).
City extensions cost the merchandise coin, cloth or book (6). And how do you get merchandise? Cities next to mountains, willows and forests produce only one instead of two raw materials of these landscapes, in addition however still another landscape-specific commodity.
As the city continues to expand, the chance of getting new progress cards increases. Cards such as mining, irrigation or construction cranes can be used to promote settlement; cards such as merchants, merchant fleets or monopolies provide advantages when trading, while cards such as defectors, spies or diplomats can be used to annoy stronger opponents.
Prepare for a harder life on Catan - and a longer but more exciting game. The first player to score 13 victory points wins.

Play a long weekend until the doctor comes? With Schloss Buchenau, a place in the middle of Germany was specially chosen so that neither Flensburger nor Garmisch-Partenkirchner could overcome the distance. Every year at Pentecost, 70 to 120 people move into this beautiful area with its various main and side houses, which is a huge area and they would like to spend a relaxed weekend without any obligations. You can play on the lawns around the main building, in the halls in the main building and in the outbuilding. Everybody can, nobody has to. Walking in nice weather? A campfire in the evening?
The organization has taken on volunteers who simply enjoy bringing people together to play in the real world. Thus there is no intention to make a profit, but the total costs for renting the castle and catering must only be covered at the end. Reduced prices are also offered for people who are not financially well off, which are covered by the other participants as a whole. A very fair procedure - and it's great that the organisers take the trouble.
Schloss Buchenau offers a large number of rooms, most of which have been redesigned in recent years, so that there are now more smaller rooms with 2, 3 or 4 beds. The service is à la youth hostel, bed linen and towels can be rented or brought along by yourself.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared by our own kitchen - the quality and choice is very high. And by the fact that it is refilled again and again, everyone gets really full :-)
When night falls in the castle, every evening werewolves, villagers, witches, Amor and other characters come together to form the popular "Werewolves in Bleak Forest". The larger the group, the more exciting and interesting it is to find out who is which character in the various day and night scenes. Will the villagers survive and exterminate the werewolves? Or do the werewolves end up killing all the villagers? A lot of fun is guaranteed.
But of course all kinds of other games will also be tried out in the other halls. There are always other players together, not all of whom are familiar with the game, but are curious to try them out.
Anyone who goes to sleep when is free to do so. It can become quite short nights - because while playing one or the other has already forgotten the time. If it's fun, time just flies...
Originally, this event was created from Catan players. Meanwhile all games are represented equally. After all, the 2018 event was in its 14th year. A complete success, because the participants seem to like it so much that they would like to come back the following year.
If you like, you can also take part in a small game tournament. Here, various games are played one after the other under the supervision of tournament leaders - and here, too, the fun factor takes precedence over winning. If you are one of the final winners in terms of points, you will even receive valuable games, donated by publishers and others.
The choice of the different games that participants bring along and make available to everyone else during the time in the castle is gigantic. The picture shows the game selection from previous years. But in 2018 this was already more than double what can be seen in the picture.
So you can always find great new games, which you might want to buy yourself later. Especially game enhancements or games, where by nature the real fun with many players increases, are ideal to play with so many game friends right here.
And a lot of friendship has developed here, which has resulted in a lot of nice gambling in the time between the event.
