Penaten is the first baby cream and was named after the deities of Roman antiquity - that's no coincidence. The "Penaten cream" was the first cream to protect sensitive baby skin.
Over the course of its more than 110-year history, Penaten has set itself the task of developing innovative products for babies and mums. In addition to the special skin compatibility, the focus of research today is on points such as the well-being and sleeping behavior of babies. Penaten : protection, care and security for your baby.
The highest goal of Penaten is to ensure a particularly good skin compatibility. The development of the Penaten products is always based on state-of-the-art research and science as well as the experience and requirements of specialist users (doctors, pediatric nurses and midwives). The scientific Penaten Advisory Board has an important advisory function. As the brand of the world's largest manufacturer of baby care products, Johnson & Johnson, we also carry responsibilities that we, like no other company, are underpinning with new scientific studies on baby skin and skin care.
The Penaten products are made exclusively from selected ingredients and are subject to strict purity controls. Quality controls during production are comparable to those in the pharmaceutical sector.
Product development according to guidelines
Each ingredient undergoes a toxicological evaluation and each product goes through extensive testing before it enters the marketplace. This applies to new products, but also to products that are already on the market - for example, if the composition is optimized on the basis of legal requirements, consumer wishes or new insights.
For example, in recent decades, Penaten has removed many perfumes from its products after the potential allergy hazard of these substances has become known. Even parabens, which are considered to be extremely safe preservatives, have been replaced. The reason for this was the public concern of consumers.
What stages a product goes through before it goes on the market :
- The development of a high quality product begins with the careful selection of raw materials.
It is checked if the product meets all requirements of the local and European authorities.
- Afterwards the experts in research and development will test various prototypes for their effects and stability.
- Consumers are asked if the prototype meets all their requirements.
- Only when a product passes all tests and meets all requirements, it comes to the market.
Collaborating with physicians, midwives and caregivers
Johnson & Johnson, the parent company of Penaten, is researching the development of baby care products worldwide. In order to always incorporate current findings from science and practice, the company also maintains close contact with medical-scientific, external experts such as pediatricians, dermatologists, midwives and pediatric nurses. These four professions are represented in Germany in a scientific advisory board, which advises Penaten on the preparation of scientific material.
Maximum Safety, Tolerability & Efficacy Studies
As the world's largest manufacturer of baby care products, we have the responsibility to put scientific research behind the development and marketing of products. No company in the world has done so many baby skin care studies as Johnson & Johnson. We have made numerous studies in this area possible.
In Germany, we conducted studies with the support of penates at publicly independent institutes. The most intensive research on these topics: differences between baby and adult skin, development of baby skin, effect of cleaning products and oils on the skin barrier. We also conduct sleep behavior studies on the use of baby products and on the influence of massage and touch.
The study results are usually submitted to internationally recognized journals .
The journals then appoint independent and external scientists to test the article for scientific standards. Only after passing the exam will the articles be published (usually in English).
In our research, it is always important to us that the conduct of the studies and the analysis of the data takes place objectively and uninfluenced . The study results will be published independently of the result. The reputable research partners we work with value the same. This ensures objective and scientifically recognized research.
How to conduct a scientific study with babies and children
What condition must be fulfilled: Before starting, an ethics committee will examine the planned study.
Only when it gives the green light, the study can begin.
Who participates : Only with the consent of parents children can participate in the study. You also need to have healthy skin. The search for the small participants is sometimes time-consuming and logistically very complex, because the age and health status of the children, the period, the duration and the complexity of the study can limit the choice of children.
How to work : For objective data acquisition, it is very important to work under standardized conditions. For this, as many influencing factors as possible have to be excluded or specified in all study participants so as not to disturb the actual measurements. Some possible examples are: All competitors must use the same diaper brand. In the last 12 hours, participants must not have applied lotion or cream. The measurements should take place in air-conditioned rooms where temperature and humidity can be specified. The children must first acclimatise for half an hour before measurements are taken.
What is measured : The most common values measured in skin examinations are:
- Water loss of the skin, pH, skin moisture of the skin surface
- Lipid content (a type of fat content) of the skin surface
What is measured : With sensors that are placed on the skin and can not hurt them. Parents also need to keep a journal of extraordinary events or observations, such as when the child has a cold. These details are important to understand unusual results when evaluating the measurement data - for example, when a child's facial skin suddenly deteriorates massively due to a cold.
How to evaluate : For the objective analysis of the data, a statistician is consulted. If possible, the statistician only gets the data of the various groups, but he does not know which group was treated as. For example, he only gets data labeled "Group A" and "Group B", but he does not know with which care product which group was treated. This prevents the statistician from unconsciously influencing the data analysis because he thinks, for example, that one care product is better than the other.
Where the results will be published : At the end of each study, the results will be submitted in an international scientific journal. The publisher then appoints independent experts - the authors of the study do not know who it is. These experts review the study report and may require corrections or other data from the authors. It can also happen that a manuscript is rejected by a journal. It often takes a whole year from the first submission in the journal to final publication in print.
How long it takes to complete a study : the entire period from conception to study, to implementation, to publication can be three years or more.

The first days with Baby: Welcome to the world!
time for closeness and peace
The start into family life is best achieved in peace and quiet. Midwives recommend new mothers or families to nestle down at home for one or two weeks and largely forget about the rest of the world.
Of course, it's not necessarily easy to withdraw when friends and relatives want to congratulate or see the baby. However, you are free to set priorities here. If it is too much for you, you can simply postpone your visit to a later date. The mobile phone can also be switched off for a longer period of time or at least be silent.
After all, you need time to...
- ...getting to know each other first.
- ...learning how to breastfeed or finding the best rhythm for bottle-feeding.
- ...finding a sleeping rhythm and getting used to getting up in the night.
- ...get to know the new, tiny family member and build a close relationship with the child (this is called bonding)
- ...to perfect the procedures for changing diapers, baby care and baby bathing.
- ...to cope with the new family member upsetting your daily routine all the time
Do not forget: important dates
Despite all the seclusion in the first few days, there are a few organizational points that you definitely need to think about:
- The U2 at the pediatrician, if it hasn't already been done at the hospital
- Apply for the birth certificate within 1 week after the birth, if not already done at the clinic
- Inform the employer about the birth, also in the first week after the birth
- Register your baby with the health insurance
- Submit the application for maternity benefit
- If necessary, inform the day nurseries where you have registered your child about the birth
Break for mum - rest and recovery after the birth
In the beginning you should rather concentrate on sleeping, resting and activities while lying down or sitting. After all, your body has to recover from a lot of effort and is going through a lot of changes in the process of regression. It is not for nothing that the first six to eight weeks after birth are called postpartum. So why not treat yourself to little pampering breaks in between to recharge your batteries. This will benefit you and your baby.
Here are some ideas for mama breaks
- A nap as soon as the little darling is asleep, especially the times after breastfeeding or bottle feeding are ideal, because babies like to fall asleep contentedly right after drinking. Just find a comfortable place on the bed or sofa for breastfeeding or feeding so you can doze off with your baby.
- Slow down. The first days with Baby are exciting. After a while, however, the hand movements become routine and boredom can arise. After all, your "parents' everyday life" is now less varied and you also get less talk than before at work. Try to use this time of deceleration. The baby is asking you enough - adjust to its rhythm and enjoy the time of monotony. This will soon be over when your baby starts to discover the world.
- A little time alone, allow yourself some free time now and then and ask others for support. It is good to have friends or grandparents looking after your child for an hour or two. This way you can do things that are important for you and your well-being without being disturbed. A walk with your partner, pursuing your hobby, a visit to the hairdresser...
Division of tasks between mum and dad
How you and your partner divide the big and small tasks in the baby's everyday life among you depends on many factors. It depends on whether dad takes parental leave or not, how much support you get from your grandparents, how much time you have and how the daily routine is structured. Every couple will find an individual solution here.
The important thing is that you, the parents, actually find a solution. Right from the start, the wishes and needs should be communicated here. This way you can set clear rules before someone feels unfairly treated.
Rules for the division of tasks concern things like:
- Taking care of the sparrow at night
- Taking care of the baby alone, while the other one has time for himself
- If not breastfed: give vial
- Comforting the baby when he cries
- Changing diapers
- Put to bed
How you can get to know and understand your baby
During your pregnancy you must have asked yourself again and again what it will be like when your baby is born. Now that it is in the world, you can finally get to know, understand and love this little person even more. This is how it works:
Get to know each other. Not every baby is the same. Even the smallest ones already have their own peculiarities and preferences. Over time, you will find out what your baby likes and dislikes. You do this by observing his reactions in different situations. Are you happy with your bath? Does it complain when breastfeeding if you ate garlic the day before? Is it better in the morning than in the evening?
Even newborns can express their needs quite well, even if they cannot yet speak. And we can instinctively understand their signals just as naturally. So rely on your feelings. Your baby uses eye contact and body language to communicate with you. For example, by looking at you attentively and making encouraging arm and leg movements, your baby shows that he wants to play or cuddle you. By turning his head and body to the side, he usually signals that he needs a break, and of course your baby cries or cries to show you that he needs something.
In the weeks after the birth, your strong feeling of love for your child will be even stronger. With some parents this feeling develops only slowly now, this is also completely normal. This strong feeling of togetherness is also called bonding. You can also consciously accelerate the bond to your baby. Often this is especially important for dads who can't establish an intensive bond either through pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Postpartum depression: Tears of greatest happiness
When mothers hold their newborn in their arms, most people are flooded with a feeling of great happiness. After all the months of waiting, after the exhausting hours of birth, their baby is finally here. A wonderful, very special moment! However, most women also experience in the following days that their feelings are sometimes surprisingly mixed. That suddenly everything becomes too much for them and tears start to flow. This mood crash, which usually occurs between the 3rd and 10th day, is called baby blues or postpartum depression. In medicine it is called postpartum depression or post-natal depression (PND).
Causes for the baby blues
No mom should blame herself for that. The reason for this mood is the great physical and psychological strain of pregnancy and birth. In addition, there are the strong hormonal changes after the birth.
If these feelings last longer and are still present one month after birth, it may be postpartum depression. Nobody needs to be ashamed of depression! In such a case, however, you should get professional advice from a midwife or doctor.
You deserve support - the midwife helps you
Remember that you are entitled to daily home visits from your midwife for the first 10 days after the birth. She can help you with all questions concerning physical changes, your psychological well-being, breastfeeding and baby care.
